Dasavatharam – Review
Posted by Lakshminarayanan on June 13, 2008
Yesterday midnight at 12 I was cursing myself for staying late in the office with hell lot of work. But good that I was able to use that as the reason for reaching office late today after watching this movie. Here goes my review.
Spoiler Alert:
If you don’t want to know the story or interesting sequences of the movie, please avoid reading. I cannot write reviews like some websites which keep praising the movie without writing anything about the story.
Heard of the proverb ‘All’s well that ends well’? Well, here’s something which was not going well with mutitude of problems but managed to strike the bull’s eye at the end. Yes, I am talking about Dasavatharam – the latest Kamal Hasan movie which faced myriad of controversies and issues and finally released today with a bang.
The story unfolds in Chennai, 21st Century with Govinda Rajan (Scientist Kamal-1) addressing thousands of people about why he was there then. Immediately we are taken to 12th century when 2nd Glothunga Chozhan an ardent Saivite decides to knock off the Vishnu idol from the Temple at Chidambaram. As expected Rangaraja Nambi (Kamal-2) makes his entry and thrashes the soldiers of the king. He tries to argue but fails and finally asked to chant ‘Ohm Namashivaya’ at least once and he will be emancipated then. He utters ‘Ohm Namo Narayanaya’ and thrown into the sea with the idol. That’s it. The flashback so emotional and touching but has nothing to do with the movie except that the name of the deity thrown into the sea is also Govinda Rajan.
We come back to 21st century and Govind works in Seagle which researches on bio weapons. He finds the most dangerous bio-weapon is planned to be sold to a terrorist group by his chief. He snatches it and runs out of the place. He is chased by the villain Christian Fletcher (Kamal -3) and George Bush’s (Kamal -4) men. The box travels to India along with that Kamal and the story also shifts to India. The whole movie is a chase for Govind and the box by the villain and the local RAW Police headed by Balram Naidu (Kamal-5). Needless to say that it ends in a positive note.
This movie is one of the milestones in Tamil cinema in terms of technology and screenplay (with minor flips). Climax Tsunami scene has been shot excellently which makes you drop your jaws with awe. The movie’s pace is equivalent to that of a Hollywood thriller in the first half with comedy interspersed in between which makes you not to look at your wrist watch. Second half is slower than first half with social and agnostic messages interspersed and you can feel the reduction in pace. Some how KS Ravikumar has failed to keep the momentum in the second half or may be it is intentional.
It’s a total feast for Kamal fans and they deserve it after a long wait. I can bet – no one in this world can match Kamal’s abilities in dialog delivery. Be it the Telugu-Tamil accent by Balram Naidu (my choice of best character in the movie), pukka brahmin old lady accent by Krishnaveni, Nagacoil tamil accent by Vicent Poovaragan or the American English accent by George Bush and Christian Fletcher, Kamal scores 200/100. But out of 10 (Rangaraja Nambi, Govinda Rajan, Christian Fletcher, George Bush, Avtar Singh, Krishnaveni Patti, Japanese Martial Artist, 7 foot Kaliafullah, Vincent Poovaragan and Balram Naidu) characters, only 3 or 4 (Balram Naidu, Krishnaveni Paatti, Vincent Poovaragan and Christian Fletcher) make an impression. Other characters have been added just for the sake of it. Kamal’s manerism as all these characters is impeccable. Especially Christian Fletcher who imitates contemporary Hollywood Villains. It is just awesome.
Though there are no duets, Asin has an important role to play and she has done it neatly. If she moves to Bollywood, Kollywood will surely miss a talented actress. I felt she still has scope for improvement in her dialog delivery. Or may be since she acts with Kamal, it looked obvious. Mallika Sheravat is aware of what audience expect from her and she is generous enough in giving it.
-ves:
* Reduced pace in second half
* Scenes where the graphics could have been better (in the flash back and during chases)
* Kamal’s dance in Oh Oh Sanam (his age is felt only there)
* Strong characterization for 5 of the characters and very weak for others
But, as a whole, its a racy and novel entertainer. It’s undoubtedly worth the money that you are spending. After all, its K.S.Ravikumar who has wielded the megaphones and he knows the pulse of audience.
Verdict: Are you still reading my review? Damn…go and book your tickets…

Hey .. thats the way to go about things – not revealing story yet speaking about the movie. Well, because you gave that spoiler alert, I stayed away. In fact have not read any review till now. Will watch it anyways sometime when I get a chance …
Will come back then …
Cheers,
Vinayak

Actually the story is not strong to be spoiled by leaking out. If the movie runs, it will be because of the novel attempt to show 10 totally different characters and the technical excellence.
Let me know your views once you watch the movie.

Hey, i really appreciate your review. I’ve read some other reviews that have been entirely negative, and quite disappointing. But i think this film is a milestone in Tamil cinema. but i would like to share some information with you in regards to your comment “Other characters have been added just for the sake of it.” There is actually a substantial amount of significance to each of the characters. Read below:
One thing we had noticed is why people didnt get the real subtext and reason for the various roles and hence the title.
If you knew the real dasavatharams of Lord Vishnu and their characters you can appreciate the script more. Let me explain, starting with the best adapted role:
1. Krishna avatar – Vincent Poovaraghavan
Lord krishna is actually a dalit, he is dark-skinned [shyamalam]. He saved draupadi when she was being violated and he was the actual diplomat in mahabharatham. Lord krishna dies of an arrow striking his lower leg. Now look at how vincent was introduced.. he appears when asin is about to be molested and he saves her like draupadi. Vincent is the dalit diplomat, fights for land issue [soil issue to be exact] and dies from the metal rod striking his leg. Oh even five of vincent’s men are drugged at P. Vasu’s.. sounds familiar???
2. Balarama avatar – Balarama naidu
This is an easy given. as the name suggests and the role personifies you can easily get it.
3. Mathsya avatar – Ranagaraja nambi
nambi is thrown into water in an act of trying to save lord from being thrown into sea, though vainly. what more clue do you want?
4. Varaha avatar – Krishnaveni paatti
During the mukunda song, krishnaveni paatti does varaha avatar in the shadow puppetry. The frame freezes on it for a second. there is the clue. Moreover, in varaha avatar lord actually hides earth so as to protect life forms. Here too krishnaveni hides the germs – life form inside the statue so as to protect.
5. Vamana avatar – Kalifulla khan
remember in vamana avatar, lord vishnu takes the vishvaroopa, that is the giant form! Hence the giant kalifulla here symbolises vamana avatar.
6. Parasurama avatar – Christian Fletcher
Parasurama is actually on an angry killing spree and killed 21 generations of the particular kshatriya vamsa. Hence the real KILLER… Guess what thats what our Fletcher is! He comes around with the gun [modern upgrade for axe] and kills everyone around. I have to check if he kills 21 people though.
7. Narasimha avatar – Shingen Narahashi
first of all the name itself is a play on the words singam [means lion in tamil] and narasimha [the avatar being symbolised]. Lord Narasimha manifests himelf to kill the bad guy and he also teaches prahaladha. In the movie, he shows up to kill the killer fletcher! and is also a teacher.. Lord Narasimha had to kill the asura with bare hands and hence the martial arts exponent here.. get it?
8. Rama avatar – Avatar Singh
Lord Rama stands for the one man one woman maxim, kind of symbolising true love.. Here Avatar portrays that spirit by saying that he loves his woman more than anything and wants to live for her.
9. Kalki avatar – Govindaraj Ramasamy
As you know, the hero in kaliyug can be none other than the Kalki avatar!!!
10. Koorma avatar – Bush
This is the most loose adaptation I couldn’t clearly comprehend. But if you look at the real koorma avatar, the lord is the turtle/tortoise that helps in stirring the ksheera sagara and bringing out the amruth. This essentially creates war among the devas and asuras. Similarly today Bush facilitates war between you know whom… May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise…
At first, i could not make out what Kamal was trying to do with all of the characters, but upon reading this, i was amazed, and realized that Kamal is a genius. Never before has this been done in Tamil cinema.

good review, bro…
certainly a good movie….purely entertaining and i do really appreciate the screenplay. However, the movie is not on the par as exagerated during the film promotion. Unnecessary stunts…music score is lacking of some punch…Asin’s dialogue could have been improved…should all the 10 characters done by 1 person? …Indian cinema..still long way to go…and hope in future producers and directors will come up with good movie which is worth of high budget…..overall scoring is….60 out of 100

@premz
Yes man…for all those who were expecting something different in story and screenplay, Kamal and KSR have taught that its after all a Tamil film and we should not expect more…
@currynriceman
ha ha ha…hilarious…even Kamal would not have thought in these lines…please do inform Kamal…at least he will get a better reason for those 10 characters…
And finally, Lord Krishna is black in colour (even Krishna means black) I accept, but He was not a dalit. During His time there was no concept of dalits…He was a kshatriya by birth and shudra by raising…whatever it was, He is the Almighty…

Looks like Kamal Hassan had a little something for everybody in this movie. Except Balram Naidu no other character has found 100% acceptance. Where you praise the Fletcher character, other including self found it to be a very wooden performance. However, the movie went a long way in meeting expectations and cannot be called a waste of time.
Good review.

Yes, True. Only the Balram Naidu character leaves a long lasting impact. But its a novel attempt though Kamal has not succeeded entirely.
I was praising Fletcher’s character not for its make-up but for the manerisms and dialog delivery.
Thanks and keep reading.
